JAMATH SHOFFNER AANGESTELD ALS NIEUWE TRAINER
Jamath Shoffner wordt de nieuwe trainer van KV Oostende. De 45-jarige Amerikaan was tot voor kort trainer bij het Luxemburgse Dudelange, waarmee hij op de tweede plek stond in de Luxemburgse competitie. Hij beëindigde er zijn contract om aan de slag te gaan bij KVO.
Shoffner begon zijn trainerscarrière in Luxemburg, waar hij verscheidene nationale jeugdteams coachte. Hij was tevens assistent-coach in de MLS bij Charlotte FC, bij de nationale ploeg van Luxemburg en bij de U20 van de Verenigde Staten. Daar werkte hij samen met spelers als Timothy Weah en Sergino Dest.
Zijn carrière als hoofdtrainer bracht hem naar Luxemburg waar hij Jeunesse Canach en recent F91 Dudelange onder zijn hoede had. De eerste ploeg leidde hij in de terugronde vanuit de degradatiezone naar een tiende plek, met Dudelange bekleedde hij de tweede plek in de competitie. Met deze Luxemburgse club behaalde hij ook drie zeges in de Conference League. Zo was het de eerste keer ooit dat een Luxemburgse club zich kwalificeerde voor een volgende ronde in Europa.
Ook in België heeft Shoffner al wat ervaring want in het seizoen 2019-2020 was hij assistent-trainer van Dino Toppmöller bij Virton.
Benjamin Ehresmann: “We zijn ervan overtuigd dat we tot nu toe niet het maximale uit onze selectie haalden en we hebben er alle vertrouwen in dat Jamath het tij kan keren. Hij speelt op een manier die we allemaal willen zien: vooruit pressen met aanvallend en agressief voetbal. Vanaf we beginnen praten zijn over de mogelijkheid tot samenwerking, maakte hij indruk met zijn open blik en positieve persoonlijkheid. Bij zijn vorige clubs toonde hij ook dat hij jonge spelers beter kan maken dus hij is een zeer interessant profiel voor onze jonge spelersgroep. Het feit dat we hem nu halen, toont ook aan dat we, ondanks de moeilijke situatie, al naar de toekomst kijken. Hij is een keuze voor een langetermijnvisie en dat wil ik ook uitdragen. We kijken er naar uit om met hem samen te werken.”
Jamath Shoffner: Ik ben me er terdege van bewust dat de club zich momenteel in een moeilijke situatie bevindt. Toch ben ik erg enthousiast om hier te starten want deze club heeft toch een mooie traditie in het Belgische voetbal. Een dikke proficiat ook aan de spelers en staf met het fantastische resultaat van gisteren. De staf heeft de afgelopen weken geweldig werk geleverd onder zeer uitdagende omstandigheden en ik kijk ernaar uit om met hen te blijven samenwerken. Ik wens ook het allerbeste voor Michiel Jonckheere en video-analist Jarne Kesteloot bij het starten van hun nieuwe project in Brugge. Natuurlijk is het op dit moment geen makkelijke situatie maar ik hoop dat we allemaal samen aan hetzelfde zeel kunnen trekken en hard kunnen werken om de club vooruit te helpen.
Jamath Shoffner becomes the new head coach of KV Oostende. The 45-year-old American was until recently coach at Luxembourg’s Dudelange, with which he was in second place in the Luxembourgish competition. He terminated his contract to start working at KVO.
Shoffner started his coaching career in Luxembourg, where he coached several national youth teams. He was also an assistant coach in the MLS with Charlotte FC, with the national team of Luxembourg and with the U20 of the United States. There he worked with players such as Timothy Weah and Sergino Dest.
His career as a head coach took him to Luxembourg where he managed Jeunesse Canach and recently F91 Dudelange. He led the first team in the return round from the relegation zone to tenth place, and with Dudelange he occupied second place in the competition. With this Luxembourg club he also achieved three victories in the Conference League. It was the first time ever that a Luxembourg club qualified for the next round in Europe.
Shoffner also has some experience in Belgium because he was an assistant coach of Dino Toppmöller at Virton in the 2019-2020 season.
Benjamin Ehresmann: “We are convinced that we have not gotten the most out of our selection so far and we are confident that Jamath can turn the tide. He plays in a way that we all want to see: pressing forward with attacking and aggressive football. At his previous clubs he also showed that he can make young players better and impressed us with his open-minded view and positive personality from the day we’ve started to talk about this opportunity. So, he is a very interesting profile for our young group of players. The fact that we are getting him now also shows that, despite the difficult situation, we are already looking to the future. He is a choice for a long-term vision, and I want to convey that. We look forward to working with him.”
Jamath Shoffner: I am well aware that the club is in a difficult situation right now. Still, however, I am very excited to begin this journey with KVO as the club has a long tradition in Belgian football. A big congratulations to the players and staff getting the team prepared and earning a fantastic result yesterday. They have done a great job the last weeks under very challenging conditions, and I am looking forward to continuing to work with them. I also hope all the best for Michiel and (video analyst) as they begin their new project in Brugge. Of course, it’s not easy during this time, but I hope we can all come together and work hard to help push the club forward.
